BMW’s S55 engine is known to run hot. The stock thermostat often allows oil temperatures to climb to around 120°C during normal driving, which is far from ideal for spirited road use, fast road builds or track days. The Mosselman MSL Oil Thermostat opens earlier at 85°C and maintains a far more controlled oil temperature band of roughly 95 to 105°C, depending on the car and conditions. This helps protect the engine, stabilise performance and reduce heat-related stress, especially on Stage 1 and Stage 2 tuned cars.
Unlike crude always-open plates, this is a genuine thermostat that still brings the oil up to operating temperature quickly. Warm-up times remain comparable to stock, so you get the best of both worlds: fast warm-up and superior temperature control once hot.
